The process of apple juice making involves several steps. Firstly we collect apples that are free from any blemishes or diseases and wash them thoroughly. Next, we grind the apples into a pulp with an electric pulping machine and load them into our press. We use the press to strain the juice from the pulp, collecting it into containers where vitamin C powder is added to prevent oxidation of the juice. The juice is then filtered and fed to a bottling station for bottling. Finally, we pasteurise the juice by heating it to a specific temperature in order to kill any harmful bacteria. Once pasteurised the juice is ready to be labelled and consumed.
We have been delighted in past years to have been joined in our harvesting efforts by the Falmouth University Sustainable Product Design students – initiated by their Head of School, Drummond Masterton. On more than one occasion, students have spent the morning picking apples and the afternoon learning about the pressing process and enjoying the results – here is some of the student feedback we received:
The experience was so very helpful in our focus on looking at community based sustainability
It was a very rewarding experience, a very simple act of squeezing apple juice out if an apple, but from picking it off the tree yourself to drinking
apple picking is hard work but in the end tastes sooo good
The juice is available to buy in our Tea Room during the season that the gallery and gardens are open to the public. It is sometimes also available on our farmstand through the winter.
