Kestle Barton by night

12 August 2023

Kestle Barton by night… with Astronomer Carolyn Kennett

FULLY BOOKED

As the daylight fades on Saturday August 12 we will gather at Kestle Barton to view the current exhibition, river by night, with its beautiful light pieces illuminating the gallery, taking the opportunity  to also view the Perseid meteor shower at its peak with astronomer Carolyn Kennet.

We will meet at about 7pm in the orchard by the Pavilion to light a bonfire and cook food on our outdoor kitchen followed by a low light walk to glimpse the sunset over the river, watching the changes to the shadows, colours and natural sounds as night time approaches.

This will be followed by a visit to the gallery to experience Kira Freije’s sculptural installation in the now dark gallery; giving her metal and blown glass sculptures the best light to really shine and amplifying the illuminating aspects of the work.

By 9.30 we are at the end of civil twilight and the stars and brighter planets will start to become really clear. Carolyn will talk about the folklore and history surrounding the sky, particularly the Perseids, and the Milky Way and perception of the sky in the past. We will end the evening watching the meteor shower and looking through a telescope at brighter objects in the sky (weather permitting).

NOTE: If there is actual rain the event will be postponed until Sunday 13 August.

£20 ticket (+ optional £5 camping pitch fee) – the evening with astronomer Carolyn Kennett, access to night viewing of Kira Freije, river by night exhibition, and room on the hearth fire to cook your own dinner (byo). Overnight camping is also an option. Please follow this Eventbrite link to book your place.
