Part of the opening weekend of Gustav Metzger: Earth Minus Environment exhibition ( 25 June – 4 September)
Members of the public are warmly invited to sign up for this botanical workshop at Kestle Barton, led by botanist and Cambridge University postgraduate researcher Nicholas Koenig.
Starting with a botanical hike, Nick will share his knowledge of Kestle’s local flora and fauna, where participants will be encouraged to practice plant illustration, leaf and flower identification, in addition to specimen picking.
The second part of the workshop will take place in the Kestle artist studio where Nick will teach participants how to make Natural History Specimens and study their cuttings in more detail. Connecting to Gustav Metzger’s enduring message for us to ‘Remember Nature’, the workshop will encourage participants to people look deeper into Cornish ecology. By connecting in a potentially new and deeper way to Kestle’s surrounding plant life, Nick hopes participants will leave the workshop feeling empowered to protect the ‘Environment’.
Note: Please wear appropriate footwear, to go out walking to collect botanical specimens!
Nicholas Koenig is a current postgraduate student at the University of Cambridge studying the Anthropocene or the ‘human epoch’, but exploring the narrative and emotions of plant extinctions. Nick previously studied Botany and Biology at Eastern Kentucky University. He is originally from Kentucky in the United States and loves gardening, climbing trees, and botanising.
